Understanding Vaccines: Making the Best Choice for You and Your Family

Vaccines play an important role in protecting our health and the health of those around us. Over the years, they have helped prevent the spread of serious diseases, from measles to the flu. As we continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, many people have questions about vaccines—how they work, which ones are recommended, and what choices are best for their families.

How Do Vaccines Work?

Vaccines help our immune system recognize and fight diseases before we get sick. They use a weakened or inactive form of a virus to help the body build immunity, reducing the risk of severe illness.

Recommended Vaccines by Age

The CDC provides guidelines on vaccines for different age groups, from infancy to older adulthood. These include:

  • Childhood Vaccines: Protection against diseases like measles, mumps, polio, and whooping cough.
  • Adolescent & Teen Vaccines: Boosters and additional protection against conditions like HPV and meningitis.
  • Adult Vaccines: Flu shots, shingles vaccines, and others that help maintain long-term immunity.
  • COVID-19 & Updated Vaccines: The pandemic introduced new vaccines to help protect against severe illness. While the urgency of the pandemic has passed, COVID-19 vaccines remain available for those who choose to stay up to date.

Vaccination is a Personal Choice

While vaccines are widely recommended by health professionals, we recognize that decisions about health care are personal. It’s important to make informed choices based on medical advice, personal beliefs, and individual health needs. If you have questions, talking with a doctor can help you make the best decision for yourself or your family.
